Cykel och tuta, 2011

Soccer may be a complete commercial spectacle. But as it is the world's most popular sport, activating several million people, it leaves few without more or less banal memories of their own to relate to. These are mine.









As I find it hard to translate this to English and still retain the intended tone, I've picked out two key passages:

During primary school I cycled the three kilometers from Hälsingberg to Korsnäs once a week to get to soccer practice. I guess I had borrowed shoes from some friend of the family, and we affixed the shin guards under our yellow socks using masking tape. /.../

/.../ Despite the neocolonial european demands the south africans didn't ban the vuvuzelas from any world cup matches. It felt refreshing. I picked up my own old horn and joined in their "see if we care!".

This slightly physically disabled (/cyborg) calf has been equipped with a wire wheel and is otherwise crocheted using jute, "the Golden Fibre". The Golden Calf is commonly understood as a symbol of idolization, or as a critique of the pursuit of wealth. The hebrew word for calf can (according to a currently unconfirmed source) also mean circle.

The Industrial Religion - opening 1 April 2010

The group exhibition on the subject of religious kitsch that I'm participating in, entitled The Industrial Religion - the Religious Evolution, opens at Galleri J in two weeks time. The show is curated by artist/critic/journalist Magnus Sjöbleke who sends the following press release:

14 konstnärer deltar med verk som på olika sätt förhåller sig till religiös kitsch, den religiösa evolutionen samt den industriella religionen.

The Salon-styled hall









The "controversial" decision of this year's juror to hang artworks in one of the halls Salon-style has caused a fuss. Two middle-aged male artists have removed their works from this wall - one even leaving a (silly) explanatory note behind which has been accepted as replacement for the removed artworks. Meanwhile, another middle-aged male artist has gone back to the museum to add a moustache and beard to his painted lady, one of the works placed in the juror's hall of "favourites", in the hopes of having the piece reassessed.

Overall, it's been interesting to follow the steady lowering of the watermark through all this, and watch certain artists do things they probably normally wouldn't (in attempts to turn the imagined spotlight back on themselves?). It's also worth noting the corresponding characteristics of these three "deserters" when one of the juror's main comments to this year's exhibition was, as he put it, the regrettably low number of participating male artists.

Personally, though, I don't share the indignation of these three, and find their acts somewhat humorous but mostly counter-productive. I have never quite understood why Peter Johansson is regarded as provocative, but given the disproportionate amount of attention generated here (and how easy it seems to provoke the local middle-aged male artists) maybe it's no longer that big of a mystery...

I can't help but feel a bit discouraged - is this as good as it gets?

Our recent Guerrilla Gardening has been selected as part of the annual jury-based group show DALAKONST at Dalarnas Museum in Falun. This year's superintendent is artist Peter Johansson.

The opening event is this Saturday, November 21, from 13h00.
There'll be a guided walkabout on Wednesday 25 November at 19h00.

The exhibition stays on until 16 January 2010.

Christmas Exhibition at Galleri J opening 14/12 2008

Opening this Saturday the 14th of December and running unil January 30th, the Christmas Exhibition at Galleri J in Falkenberg features a selection of works exhibited at the gallery in 2008 as well as previews of upcoming shows in 2009. I'm represented by one of the works (in progress) that will be included in my exhibition in February 2009.

I've been awarded the municipality of Falun's 'Cultural Bursary' for 2008! The committee's statement in its original form:

Moa har efter utbildning i Kapstaden redan deltagit i flera utställningar. Hon sysslar med visuella konstverk. Genom att använda material som redan har använts tidigare för andra ändamål så skapar hon ett nytt verk som har både två och tre dimensioner. Hennes konstinstallationer har ett internationellt språk. Moa har ett stort engagemang när det gäller miljö. Ett spännande konstnärskap som just har börjat.

Graduate Show of Michaelis School of Fine Art 2007 – Press Release





















An increasingly important event on the local and national arts calendar, the Graduate Show of the Michaelis School of Fine Art is a unique opportunity to view the emerging talent emanating from one of South Africa’s top art schools and to see a first glimpse of the new face of art that will, if previous shows are anything to go by, dominate the market.

To be opened at 6 pm on 5 December, the show will run until the 15th of that month and showcase the best work of the graduating 4th Year cohort as well as post graduate students. Many of our past graduates have gone on to have significant solo shows and gain international exposure. Institutional and private collectors make a point of attending the show to see what new and fresh faces may be out there.

This year’s show will be accompanied by a lavish catalogue that will contextualise the work on display and theory lecturers Nasan Pather and Andrew Lamprecht will conduct a walkabout on Thursday the 6th at 11 am. This year’s opening will be a celebratory event and will be followed by an auction of works by major South African and international artists as well as up and coming artists, the proceeds of which will be used for student bursaries and School projects.
